A Good Mouthful of a Movie

Updated: Aug 27, 2020

It’s a mouthful to say and type – The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, but it’s the title of the best movie I’ve seen all year! This Netflix original movie takes its audience back to 1946 in London and the quaint, picturesque island of Guernsey in the English Channel.

The protagonist is a young, successful writer, played by Lily James, who is intrigued by a possible writing opportunity about a book club that was accidentally formed when Guernsey was under German occupation during World War II. When she travels to Guernsey, she meets a cast of warm, colorful characters. Through them, we learn a side of World War II history that most do not know.

The best part of this historical fiction piece is that the audience gets to work as hard as Lily James’ character to unearth what really happened during the war on Guernsey. In its back-and-forth manner, movie watchers see a picture in time of what the island was like during the war and the aftermath of what the war left behind.

So, pop some popcorn and go back in the time with The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society! Can you say it?
