Have you seen the new World War II documentary from the History Channel and Tom Hanks yet? A good history documentary always feels like a present to me! World War II with Tom Hanks began a weekly episode release on Memorial Day 2026. The new documentary “reexamines the war through the lens of a new century.”

The documentary will consist of twenty 42-minute episodes that delve into the many different aspects of World War II. The first nine episodes include “The Beginning,” “Blitz,” “Barbarossa,” “Pearl Harbor,” “The War at Sea,” “Guadalcanal,” “Darkness Falls,” “Operation Torch,” and “Secrets and Lies.” Even if you have studied World War II history before, you will learn something new!

As I write this blog, I am currently in episode seven, and I have already learned so much. For example, I did not realize the full extent and brutality that the people of Poland experienced during the war. I learned that the Soviet Union also attacked the country from the eastern side, and that both Germany and the Soviet Union wanted to destroy the Polish state. Sadly, many Polish leaders and people were executed.

I also learned about the inner workings of the Japanese leaders and their motives for allying themselves with Germany and attacking the United States. Like Germany, Japan sought to expand its territories, and its invasion of China was ruthless. The very effective Japanese fighting style was rooted in the samurai code of Bushido. I can understand now why American soldiers feared them!

If you love World War II history like I do, I highly recommend World War II with Tom Hanks. It was produced in honor of America’s 250th Anniversary. What better time to watch!
