We almost decided no. We always send out Christmas cards, but this year, we were considering not sending them for the first time. It’s been a challenging year and not sending out a reminder of it seemed fitting in a way. In another way, however, a simple Christmas card might be needed more than ever right now. So many people have been isolated throughout this year and are desperate to be acknowledged, to be thought of, to be encouraged, and to be cheered up. So, we are sending out our Christmas card despite this odd year of ups and downs that no one saw coming.
Thinking of this year and Christmas cards, reminded me of another time when cards were needed more than ever in our country. During World War II, people were separated for months and years from husbands, wives, parents, children, siblings, grandparents, and dear friends, and they didn’t have access to FaceTime, Zoom, and social media. The mail was their life line to who was most important in their lives. A simple Christmas card meant the world to a soldier serving overseas, a single mom on the home front, and a parent desperately missing their child.
Here are a few cards from World War II that might just warm your heart today. Who can you encourage with a simple but much-needed Christmas card this year? May God's hope, love, joy, and peace fill your heart during all seasons of life. Merry Christmas!
